Dear ____________
You made a grave error in changing your vote on 10-03. It was an act of betrayal that will very likely cost you your office in November.
We've read your explanation. It doesn't conceal the fact that you voted to put our children in debt an amount nearly equivalent to the cost of the Iraq War during a time in which our national debt is already almost ten trillion dollars. It likewise cannot conceal that you failed to stand for liberty and did not oppose the corruption in this bill, including the seat of Paulson on his own oversight board. In addition, the numerous 'pork' addenda in this bill are a true affront to the idea of responsible government, to say nothing of the fact that they represent additional debt spending with no offsets.
This act is another link in the chain of poorly judged risk and speculation that led us to the present crisis, and there is no guarantee that using public funds to buy private bad bets will have any positive effect on the economy whatsoever. The drop in the Dow following the vote represented an early inkling of the bill's inefficacy.
You've allowed yourself to become governed by either fear or greed rather than reason and patriotism. The values of America are responsibility and self-reliance, not cowardice and short-sightedness. The people understand the gravity of the situation and its very real dangers. That understanding does not cause us to abandon what we know to be right and wise for the expedience of temporary comfort.
The people will not stand for this trespass. We will not tolerate public liability for private debt. We will not allow those who gamble with our future to remain in office.
Work has already begun to repeal this criminal act, and those who supported it will be called to account.
Sincerely,
_________
